  1. Hi Sean,

Just thought I’d tap your brains regarding the new Lumia 950 phones. You think this would be a good alternative to the iPhone 6s / 6s Plus? (ref. http://www.ibtimes.com/lumia-950-vs-galaxy-s6-vs-iphone-6s-microsofts-flagship-smartphone-serious-challenger-2129017)

I am in the market for a new phone. I have been using Android 4.1.2 on a Galaxy S2 for the past week, read about the issues adjusting from Kit Kat to Lollipop, and just ran into the dreaded “Insufficient Storage” warning (when I have over 10GB left in internal SD card). (That last bit just about ruined any chances that I’ll switch to Samsung S6 running Android v5 or v6.)

So thought I’d check what you think about the Windows phones. (At least they support WhatsApp and FB Messenger. Not sure about the local news apps like ST App, CNA, Toggle, Bloomberg, etc.)

    Cheers,
    sChen

  2. Hi sChen,

The new Lumia 950 and Lumia 950XL are interesting phones. My interest is piqued by their ability to run Continuum.

” Use your Lumia 950 like a PC by connecting it to a bigger screen, keyboard and mouse with Microsoft Display Dock, an optional accessory that enhances the new Windows 10 Continuum experience — and concurrently charges your device. When you’re connected, Windows apps can scale smoothly and display beautifully on the bigger screen, helping you to get things done. Work on a Microsoft Office document, browse the Internet or stream movies for your kids. ”

On paper specs of the 950 and 950XL are quite similar to the latest Nexus 5X and 6P – Snapdragon 808 / 810, qHD screens, USB-C fast charging, but US pricing is a little high. Not sure how good is the camera performance.

Third party app support on Windows Phone is still mediocre. For e.g. You can forget about Toggle and would have to watch it through the browser. You do have CNA, Bloomberg, but for e.g. the Straits Times app has not been updated for some time. Microsoft default apps are quite good. You might have to rely on Microsoft’s own reading app, which aggregates content feeds. I guess that’s still the main stumbling block for Windows phone.

For new phones, Apple fans can’t go wrong with the iPhone 6S Plus, but it’s pricey. Android fans have more options and if external storage is a must, then how about the G4, Mi Note, OnePlus 2, or the Xperia Z5?
