OnePlusOne Pricing & Availability

OnePlusOne Pricing & Availability

The OnePlusOne looks set to be a very popular phone, with a phone that is powerfully unique, shockingly cheap.

In an interesting marketing twist, OnePlusOne would only be available through an invite system. This means that only people who received an invitation from one of their friends or from OnePlus will be able to buy the device. After buying the device, you will receive a number of invitations that you can send to friends interested in the OnePlus One. Getting invites would be quite the challenge and invites would be a hot commodity for the next few months.

For now, the only way to secure an early invitation seems to be OnePlus’ Smash The Past contest. In exchange of sacrificing – literally smashing – your old phone, you will get to “buy” a OnePlus One for $1. There are 100 devices at stake, and each winner will be able to invite some friends to buy the phone. You only need to submit your email address to enter the contest. I can sort of imagine a spiralling web, 100 devices, maybe with 10-20 invites, and then the web continues to grow.

The OnePlus One will be offered at launch in two versions:

16GB Silk White – $299/€269/£229
64GB Silkstone Black – $349/€299/£269

There is no microSD expansion slot, so investing an extra $50 in the 64GB version is recommended. This might be the only drawback of the phone. Other manufacturers tend to charge $50 for a single storage bump, e.g. 16GB to 32GB, instead of 64GB.

The phone has been passed to the media for review, and AndroidPolice and AndroidCentral have had a hands on with the phone and generally, the reviews are rather positive. Seems like overall experience on both hardware and software side are great. AndroidPolice specifically highlights that The most surprising thing about the OnePlus One is just how solid it feels, for lack of a better word. Compared to the Nexus 5 (which uses essentially the same slate design) it’s a rock, and it’s close to the admirable build quality of HTC and Motorola. I always think of the Nexus 5 as the phone equivalent of a pony car: it’s cheap and powerful, but the build absolutely reflects the purchase price. The OnePlus One feels like it should cost much more than the $300 it does.

Release Date

The device will begin shipping in “late May”.

Initial Release Markets

At launch, the OnePlus One will be available in the following countries:

Hong Kong
United States

OnePlus will be offering localized versions of its website for these markets, but the localized sites aren’t live yet. More markets will probably follow in the future, but, for now, OnePlus has not offered any details on the matter. Singapore won’t probably see the OnePlus One anytime soon, instead, we may have to rely on import sets from US, or Hong Kong.

Invites are also still hard to come by, but there are available stocks in Singapore already through resellers. At a mark up of cost but well, may not be that bad considering you factor for shipping and you can at least test out the phone immediately.

Available from Qoo10 OPO Reseller here.
