Deal Alert: HP Stream 7 US$99 (Ships Free to Singapore)

The HP Stream 7 is now available for orders. What’s so unique about this tablet? It is a 7 inch tablet that runs the full Windows 8.1 OS and costs less than US$100.

The HP Stream 7 tablet has a 1280×800 resolution display, an Intel Atom Z3735G processor (quad-core) with a clock speed of 1.8 GHz, 1 GB of RAM and a 32 GB eMMC drive for storage. Supports external microSD cards. It also has a 2 megapixel rear camera and a 0.3 megapixel front facing camera and its battery is supposed to last up to eight hours. The screen is a 7-inch IPS, 1280 x 800, with dimensions 4.36 inch w x 0.39 inch d x 7.59 inch and weighing at 0.8 pounds (362g).

It is a budget tablet, and looks like one. It’s fat, heavy, thick (just look at that side profile), but at least the front bezel look reasonable.

The atom processor and only 1GB of RAM would limit multitasking and the tablet is meant for basic use such as net surfing, video, reading etc. However, the ability to run full Windows program is a plus, consideration the limited apps on the RT platform. The Stream 7 does lack an external video port, otherwise it could potentially double up as a PC replacement. It does support Miracast, but that option is plagued by lag and limited to 1280 x 800 resolution. Just about capable for the average presentations and picture viewing, but nothing more. The charging port is OTG compatible, so you can hook up other USB devices. The Windows 8.1 drivers should allow for quite a fair bit of device compatibility.

The HP Stream 7 currently only sells in America, but you can ship it to Singapore via Amazon. No shipping charges if your total cart exceeds $125. Do make sure you select Amazon as the retailer. In addition, there’s one year free Office 365 subscription and 1 TB OneDrive storage. That’s valued at US$69. OneDrive single file size limit is now at 10GB and it might be great to use it as a file repository. After 1 year, the files would not be deleted and remain as read-only.

What happens to the files I stored in OneDrive if my subscription expires?
If you cancel your subscription or if it expires, you can still access and download all your files by signing in to OneDrive directly using the Microsoft account you used to set up Office 365. You do lose the additional storage so you must save your files elsewhere or buy more OneDrive storage if your OneDrive account exceeds 15 GB of free storage.
