Sony Japan Unveils the Sony Xperia Z4, Set for Mid Year Launch

Sony unveiled the Xperia Z4 today on their Sony Mobile Japan website. The phone is slated for a mid year release in Japan first.

The phone looks very similar to the Xperia Z3. It uses the same combination of aluminum and glass. It retains the same full HD 1920 x 1080 5.2 inch screen, same screen to body ratio, but manage to reduce the thickness to 6.9 mm. The Sony Xperia Z4 will be available in White, Black, Copper and Aqua Green. The handset retains the same water proof capability, that first originated in the Xperia Z.

Since the first Xperia Z, Sony has largely retained the same design formula, introducing mild improvements instead of a radical design. Has Sony done enough with the Z4 or would they suffer similar backlash as HTC?

The internals have been upgraded. The Sony Xperia Z4 will feature a Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB of RAM, and runs on Android 5.0 lollipop. The front camera is a 5.1 MP wide-angle lens with focal length of only 25mm. The rear camera is the Sony G 20.7 Exmor RS lens. Storage wise sees a bump to 32 GB, which can be further expanded with a micro SD card.

One of the nicer features on the Xperia Z line had been the ability to charge via a magnet cable / dock. That’s since dropped though, now no longer available on the Xperia Z4.

If you are in Japan, the phone will be displayed at Sony Ginza Show Room from 22 April.
