Transcend’s SSD230 Uses 3D NAND Flash for Better Performance

Transcend had launched the SSD230 solid state drives earlier this month. These new drives adopt 3D NAND flash technology which promises to offer improved endurance and performance over traditional 2D planar NAND flash technology.

2D planar NAND flash technology is reaching its limits due to increased cell-to-cell interference at higher cell density. Transcend is now using 3D NAND flash to overcome this limitation, with layers of memory cells now stacked vertically. Besides increasing the density limits, Transcend claims the 3D NAND flash will offer improved read and write performance, as it does not require the invocation of algorithms to prevent data corruption. With lower cell-to-cell interference, the drives also offer higher endurance and lower power consumption.

The Transcend’s SSD230 are also equipped with a DDR3 DRAM cache that provides 4K random read and write performance of up to 340MB/s, which would make it ideal for operating system disk drives. It operates on the SATA III 6Gb/s interface and offers sequential transfer speeds of up to 560MB/s read and 520MB/s write. The SSD230 also features a RAID engine and LDPC (Low-Density Parity Check) coding, a powerful ECC algorithm, to keep data secure.
