Updating Rooted Nexus 7 to 4.2.1

If you are using a rooted Nexus 7 and wish to update it to the latest Android 4.2.1, first check what version of Android you are currently using (Settings -> About Tablet -> Android Version)

For Nexus 7 on Android 4.2

If you are, for Wifi-only Nexus 7, here’s the link. The main fix in this build is for the now-famous December People app bug. The update should appear on your device as well but OTA updates often don’t play well with rooted devices.

You can install the update to your device via ADB if you have a stock recovery by using adb sideload, or from the internal storage if you’re running a custom one like clockworkmod recovery.

If you are not running Android 4.2

It is advisable that you the entire image upgrade rather than the incremental approach shown above. For the WiFi-only Nexus 7, here’s the image file.
