Google Play NewsStand Unable to Pre-Cache

Google Play Newsstand would had a shot at becoming my most favourite app, but it sadly falls short. I was quite looking forward to it after seeing the post on AndroidPolice. It had a chance at replacing Google Currents, since it could access the same articles and more, thanks to the built-in RSS access.

It replaces Google Play Magazines, and also accesses the same content as Google Currents. RSS feeds, magazines, and newspaper can be downloaded for offline reading later, but requires to manually select the read later tab. There’s also a bookmark function. Aside from the Newspaper additions, there isn’t much new functionality or content here. It’s mostly just a combination of several of Google’s offerings into a single “news” section. Those used to apps like Flipboard will feel right at home and may even enjoy the combination of premium and free content, but anyone who feels Flipboard-style apps are visually cluttered messes that can’t replace a real RSS reader will find little here to like.

I like Currents because it will constantly refresh and pre-cache articles. Too bad, this is not a feature that is mirrored across in Google Play Newsstand. There’s also no Immersion Mode for Newsstand as well. Till the pre-caching of articles is enabled, I would still be using Google Currents.

For Singapore users, there shouldn’t be any issue to download the app from Play Store. I was able to access it directly.
