Review: ADATA PV150 Battery Pack

Review: ADATA PV150 Battery Pack

ADATA sent me the PV150 for review – it’s a portable 10000mAH battery pack that features a leather-textured exterior for a classier feel. Otherwise, the design is simple and straight forward to use, with the usual 4 led indicator for battery capacity.

It’s available in Black, White or Blue and has a 10000mAH capacity, with a retail price of S$29.90.

ADATA says the PV150 is inspired by luxury, and the leather cover does give off a more luxurious feel compared to your usual plastic, or metal cased power banks. The leather upper offers good grip and it’s also smudge free so that you can confidently carry it around. The bottom part of the battery pack which housed the connectors and buttons is a contrast, as the build quality is lower and the plastic on / off button feels a little flimsy.

A 10,000 mAH battery can charge a Samsung Galaxy S6 fully close to 4 times, and is a nice compromise between battery longevity and weight of the battery pack. The PV150 is slightly lighter than the Xiaomi 10,000mAH battery at 235g vs 250g. The PV150 Power Bank has a single 2A input for faster self-charging, and a 2.1A output port.

Testing

Performance wise, the ADATA PV150 was average. After charging a number of devices, the overall charge capacity supplied to my devices was approximately 8000m-9000mAH, which I would translate to a charging efficiency of 85%.

One thing I didn’t like was that it doesn’t charge your devices automatically when plugged in. However, it is able to switch off automatically when charging is completed.

To save time, the PV150 supports simultaneous charging and discharging for improved efficiency. No need to wait for the PV150 to be fully charged: you still can charge your mobile devices simultaneously while the PV150 is being charged. However, one area to note is that you would need a high capacity charger. When I paired with it with my 1A phone charger, both devices ended up charging way too slowly.

In terms of safety features, ADATA comes packed with six safety features including Over-Temperature Protection, Over-Charge Protection, Short Circuit Protection, Over-Voltage Protection, Over-Discharge Protection and Over-Current Protection. Its flame-resistant shielding offers greater safety, and RoHS-compliant materials make the PV150 Power Bank an eco-friendly product.

Verdict

Portable batteries are getting more common and especially useful since batteries just haven’t improved all that much. They are a convenient way to ensure your mobile device doesn’t die on you at a crucial time. The ADATA is an OK device, but would find it hard to stand out in a sea of similar devices. Fashion is one point, which ADATA hopes to attract with the leather-textured exterior but the true techie will go for performance and there are better options out there.
